The Five Elements (五行)
Everything in Chinese metaphysics flows through five elements:
- Wood (木) — growth, vision, kindness
- Fire (火) — passion, expression, warmth
- Earth (土) — stability, reliability, nurturing
- Metal (金) — precision, discipline, structure
- Water (水) — wisdom, adaptability, depth
These elements form a generating cycle (Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood) and a controlling cycle. Your chart's balance of elements shapes your natural strengths and the areas worth developing.
Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches
Ten Heavenly Stems (天干) — 甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸 — represent the elements in yang and yin forms. Twelve Earthly Branches (地支) — 子丑寅卯辰巳午未申酉戌亥 — correspond to the twelve months, the Chinese zodiac animals, and hold hidden stems that deepen each pillar's meaning.
